The NFL community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Amani Joy Ward, the 1-year-old daughter of 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward and his partner, Monique. On October 28, 2024, Charvarius shared the devastating news on social media, accompanied by a touching tribute to his late daughter.
Charvarius posted a poignant picture of Amani, beaming with joy, alongside a heartfelt message expressing his grief. “She was the greatest blessing we could have hoped for,” he wrote. “Her cheerful disposition brought us smiles from ear to ear, teaching us patience, trust, and an optimistic outlook on life.”
Amani’s strength and courage inspired her parents, who admired her resilience in overcoming challenges at such a young age. Charvarius praised his daughter’s ability to illuminate every space with her joy and charming smile.
The grieving father, who founded the nonprofit Charvarius for Change in 2021, acknowledged the unique perspective parenthood brought him and Monique. “She will always be her mother’s little girl and her father’s best friend,” he said. “Amani Joy, you will always be loved and missed.”
Charvarius’s Instagram Story featured two emotional posts, one with the words “I’m Broken” and another with a picture of Amani, captioned “My Baby. My Life. Queen of my realm. My Heart. Everything I Own.”
Monique also took to Instagram to express her sorrow, writing, “My baby. God, why?” The 49ers’ official account paid tribute to Amani, describing her as a symbol of pure happiness with a contagious laugh.
In March, Charvarius celebrated World Down Syndrome Day by sharing heartfelt photos and videos of Amani. He reflected on how parenthood taught him patience and gratitude, recognizing Down syndrome as “a gift from God.”
The couple’s love and devotion to Amani were evident in the Instagram account they created for her, documenting significant milestones in her life.
Our deepest condolences go out to Charvarius, Monique, and their loved ones during this difficult time. Amani Joy’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
