Country music icon George Strait was recently honored with the prestigious Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 CMA Awards. The November 20 ceremony saw Strait express his gratitude to those who have supported him throughout his illustrious career, including his wife of nearly 53 years, Norma.
Strait’s family, including his son Bubba, daughter-in-law Tamara, and grandchildren Jillian and Harvey, were in attendance. Strait’s heartfelt speech acknowledged their presence, saying, “I’m so glad y’all are here.” He also thanked the CMAs for recognizing him alongside other legendary artists.
The evening featured performances by Jamey Johnson and Miranda Lambert, who paid tribute to Strait’s iconic songs. Strait also honored the memory of his late managers, Erv Woosley and Tom Foote.
With 72 CMA awards and 83 nominations under his belt, Strait’s legacy is undeniable. His numerous accolades include Impact Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year.
Strait’s personal life has been marked by love and loss. He and Norma, his high school sweetheart, exchanged vows in 1971. Together, they have two children: the late Jennifer Lyn, who passed away in 1986, and Bubba, born in 1981.
Strait has often spoken about his devotion to Norma, praising her as his partner of almost 53 years. During their 50th anniversary celebration in 2021, Strait reminisced about their elopement in Mexico.
The couple’s daughter Jennifer’s tragic passing led to the establishment of the Jennifer Strait Memorial Foundation. Strait has poignantly remembered Jennifer’s love for her brother Bubba, saying, “He loved her back in the same way, and always will, just as we always will.”
Bubba has followed in his father’s footsteps, contributing to the music world through performances and songwriting. He and his wife Tamara have two children, George “Harvey” Strait III and Jilliann Louise Strait.
Strait’s enduring love for Norma and his family, coupled with his remarkable career achievements, solidify his status as a country music legend. His heartfelt tribute at the CMA Awards served as a testament to the power of love, family, and music.
