The devastating story of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old college student who was found dead in the woods, has left a community in mourning. The details of her final moments, captured on surveillance footage, have been revealed in court, providing a glimpse into the tragic events that unfolded.
Laken’s last message to her mom, sent just minutes before she went for a jog on the University of Georgia’s campus, was a simple “Good morning, about to go for a run.” Her mom, who was busy at the time, didn’t respond until later, unaware of the horror that was about to unfold.
Surveillance footage showed Laken jogging along Milledge Avenue Extension, wearing an all-black outfit and carrying her phone in her left hand. She passed by a bus stop, where students were waiting, before heading into a woodsy area. It was there that her life was brutally cut short.

Jose Ibarra, 26, was found guilty of Laken’s murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The prosecution revealed that Ibarra’s act was a “crime of opportunity,” with no prior connection to Laken.
As the community comes to terms with the loss of this young life, tributes have poured in from friends and family. Laken’s sister, Lauren Phillips, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, remembering her sister as her “built-in best friend.”
Laken’s roommates, Sofia Magana and Connolly Huth, also shared moving tributes, highlighting Laken’s kind heart and infectious spirit. Magana remembered Laken as her “best friend” and “second family,” while Huth recalled their fun times together, from running and lifting to singing and dancing.
As we mourn the loss of Laken Riley, we remember her bright smile, her love for life, and the countless memories she left behind. Our deepest condolences go out to her family and friends, who will forever cherish her memory.
