Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and for Chelsea Hough and her family, the journey of her newborn baby, Karson Jax Hough, was no exception. Born at 36 weeks, Karson initially seemed like a perfectly healthy baby, but his life took a dramatic turn when his heart rate slowed down, and his heart stopped beating.
Despite the doctors’ efforts to revive him through skin-to-skin contact with his mother, Karson’s condition remained critical, and he was put on a ventilator to support his heart and breathing. His family was devastated when doctors diagnosed him with two rare conditions: a hemorrhage in his left temporal lobe and nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), a genetic disorder that causes glycine accumulation in the body’s tissues and fluids.
The prognosis was grim, and doctors advised the family to remove Karson from life support, giving them only 10 minutes to say their goodbyes. But in a stunning turn of events, as soon as the ventilator was turned off, Karson began breathing on his own, leaving the medical team in awe.
Karson’s Nana, Lisa Hough, described the moment as a miracle, saying, “We witnessed a miracle! We were told he wouldn’t breathe on his own, but God and Karson had other plans.” As the family continued to pray and support Karson, he began to thrive, gaining weight, stabilizing his heart rate, and showing a significant drop in glycine levels.
Today, Karson is beating the odds, and his family is grateful for every moment they have with him. As they cherish this precious time, they are reminded that life is full of surprises, and sometimes, miracles can happen when we least expect them.
