I recently taught my family a lesson they will never forget, and it’s a story I’d like to share with you. It’s about my grandmother, the most selfless person I know, who raised me and my siblings while our parents were busy getting divorced. She’s always been there for us, and I couldn’t bear the thought of her feeling unappreciated.
Her 83rd birthday was approaching, and she had planned a brunch at her home, complete with handmade invitations and a delicious spread. However, when I arrived at the party, I was shocked to find that I was the only one there. My family members had all promised to attend, but they had stood her up.
I was furious and hurt, not just for myself, but for my grandmother, who had been looking forward to celebrating with her loved ones. I decided to teach my family a lesson, to make them realize how their thoughtlessness had affected Grandma.
I started by calling my mother, telling her that Grandma had fallen and was in the hospital. I guilt-tripped her into sending money to cover the hospital bills, which, of course, didn’t exist. I did the same with my brother and other relatives, collecting a sizable sum of money.
Meanwhile, I planned a surprise vacation for Grandma and me to a beautiful beach resort. I presented her with the tickets, and we spent a wonderful week together, celebrating her birthday in style.
When we returned, I posted photos of our vacation on social media, tagging my family members. They were shocked and angry, realizing they had been duped. I responded to their calls and texts, reminding them of their thoughtlessness and how it had hurt Grandma.
My family never missed another event after that day. They learned to appreciate Grandma and make amends for their past behavior. I may have gone a bit far in teaching them a lesson, but I knew it was necessary.
