In a remarkable tale of resilience, a $9 million Malibu mansion owned by US businessman David Steiner has emerged unscathed from the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. While neighboring homes were reduced to rubble, Steiner’s property stands as a testament to its sturdy construction.
The Palisades fire ravaged over 20,000 acres of land, destroying more than 5,000 homes and businesses. Authorities have attributed the fire’s spread to strong winds and a lack of rain, with a suspect in custody for allegedly starting the blaze.
Steiner’s three-story mansion, built with earthquake-resistant materials, features a fireproof roof, stone and stucco exterior, and deep pilings that anchor it to the bedrock. The retired waste-management tycoon credits the home’s “ultra-sturdy construction” for its ability to withstand the inferno.
Upon learning of the fire’s approach, Steiner feared the worst for his vacant property. However, as news reports and photos began flooding in, he realized his mansion had miraculously survived. The contrast between his intact home and the surrounding devastation was striking.
Steiner acknowledges his good fortune, recognizing that many others have lost their homes and cherished memories. His property, purchased as a secondary residence for his family, held no sentimental value, and he urges well-wishers to focus on supporting those who have suffered greater losses.
Although insured, Steiner notes that his coverage will only reimburse 50% of the damages in the event of a wildfire. As he assesses the potential smoke damage to his estate, he remains grateful for the “miracle” that spared his property.
