However, there’s no need to panic. This “wire trick” rumor has been around since 2015, when it first appeared in a Facebook post. Authorities in the Canadian city where it started found no evidence of kidnappings linked to this tactic. Similarly, anti-trafficking organizations have no records of such incidents.
The rumor resurfaced in 2019, spreading through states like Texas and Michigan. Experts, including the Director of the Human Trafficking and Social Justice Institute, have called these claims “ridiculous.” Police departments have also debunked the stories, labeling them as urban legends.
In reality, traffickers and criminals are more likely to use digital methods to target victims, often focusing on people they already know. Random tricks like tying strings to car handles are unlikely to be effective. While it’s always good to stay alert, focusing on real risks and practicing safe habits is a better use of your energy.
