Bear Brown’s emotional statement
Following confirmation of Matt’s death, his brother, Bear Brown, addressed fans in an emotional TikTok video.
”They found a body in the river a few hours ago and it was positively identified as being Matt,” Bear said.
He also revealed a painful detail about the recovery process.
According to Bear, their younger brother Noah was present when Matt was recovered and played a role in identifying him.
”Noah helped them pull the body out of the water and Noah identified [Matt],” Bear said.
During the video, Bear spoke candidly about his brother’s long struggles with addiction and personal challenges. While emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing, he shared his personal thoughts about what may have happened.
“I didn’t think he would hurt himself, it does look like the injury is self-inflicted,” Bear said. “Obviously, the coroner has to look at him and stuff, but I thought you guys should know it is him.”
He also urged fans to avoid speculation and negative comments while the family grieves.
“Sometimes words can hurt more than fists can and a lot of people left negative comments on Matt’s stuff too,” he added. “One of his last videos, he’s actually talking about how negative people were on his posts.”
“You guys should keep in mind that people on the other side of your screens, people you’re watching a video of, they’re real people too.”
Disturbing 911 call
The search for Matt began after a witness reported a frightening incident along the river.
According to a statement released by the sheriff’s office, a caller contacted emergency dispatchers after speaking with a man sitting in shallow water near the Okanogan River.
Moments later, the situation reportedly took a tragic turn.
”The caller turned away from the man sitting in the river, heard a sound, turned back toward the man in the water and saw the man was face down in the water drifting away in the current,” authorities said.
Emergency responders immediately launched a search involving deputies, firefighters, medical personnel, boats, personal watercraft, drones, and additional support from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Despite extensive efforts, search teams were unable to locate the individual that day. Officials later recovered a firearm from the water near the area where the man was last seen.
Search operations resumed the following morning with divers and additional resources, but difficult river conditions complicated recovery efforts. Authorities cited strong currents, poor underwater visibility, debris, and severe weather as major obstacles.
The search was eventually suspended before private citizens discovered Matt’s body two days later.
Growing concerns before his disappearance
The tragedy has also renewed attention on Matt’s final public appearances.
Earlier this month, he appeared in a YouTube livestream that sparked concern among viewers. During the broadcast, Matt walked through a public park while speaking to followers.
Some viewers alleged he appeared intoxicated and struggled to communicate clearly. Reports also claimed he appeared to be carrying a firearm during portions of the stream.
The video quickly generated discussion online, with many longtime followers expressing concern for his well-being.
According to reports, those concerns mirrored issues family members had been dealing with privately for years.
