A tense exchange during Donald Trump’s recent interview with NBC News became so heated that he abruptly ended the conversation and walked away, with one particular question appearing to be the catalyst for the US leader’s disapproval.

The confrontation took place during an interview with Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker, who repeatedly challenged Trump over his continued claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him.

Trump lashes out after Welker’s claim

As the discussion intensified, Welker pushed back against Trump’s assertions, telling him there was “no evidence of what you’re saying” regarding allegations of election fraud and other claims involving federal prosecutions.

The disagreement appeared to frustrate Trump, who eventually lashed out at both the journalist and the network.

“You’re a one-sided crooked network,” Trump said. “Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough. Thank you, darling. Have a good time.”

Welker attempted to persuade the president to continue the interview, reminding him that she had travelled to Wisconsin for the sit-down. Trump, however, made it clear he was finished.

“I sat in the rain with you for an hour,” he responded. “On and off in the rain, and I’ve given you enough time.”

He then turned his criticism toward the media more broadly, adding, “You ought to straighten out your press. A country can never be great with a dishonest press.”

Following the broadcast, Welker revealed that she later spoke with Trump and that he had agreed to participate in another interview in the future, although no date has been announced.

She also acknowledged that difficult weather conditions had complicated the original interview, which was conducted outdoors.

Trump and Welker clash over several topics

The conversation reportedly became increasingly confrontational during its final minutes when Welker questioned Trump about a proposed $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund. The initiative would compensate individuals who claim to have been victims of politically motivated federal investigations.

Trump praised the proposal, calling it a “great idea” and saying he would be “disappointed” if it failed to gain approval.

Welker then asked whether people involved in the January 6 Capitol riot should be eligible for compensation under such a program.

Trump responded by attacking former President Joe Biden and those around him.

“Now, I don’t know what’s going to happen with the weaponization fund. I love the idea,” Trump said. “People like stupid Biden, he’s not smart enough to know what’s going on, but people that surrounded him … what they did to the lives of people, they destroyed people. They sent people to jail who did nothing wrong.”

When Welker challenged those claims, stating there was “no evidence of what you’re saying,” Trump shifted the conversation back to the 2020 election.

“The election was rigged. It was a dirty election,” he said.

Welker again noted that Trump has not publicly presented evidence supporting those allegations. The exchange became increasingly tense before the president ultimately chose to end the interview early.

The moment has since attracted widespread attention, with many highlighting Welker’s seven-word response — “there’s no evidence of what you’re saying” — as the comment that appeared to trigger the heated conclusion to the interview.
