Indiana Community Grapples With Loss of Mother and Three Daughters

A small Indiana town is mourning after the tragic discovery of a mother and her three young daughters in their Wolcottville home. The victims have been identified as Rebecca Hughes, 32, and her children Evalynn, Allison, and Amelia, aged 8, 6, and 5 respectively. While authorities await autopsy results, they’ve assured the public there is no ongoing threat to community safety.

The girls’ father, Jonathan Newell, opened up about the emotional rollercoaster following the loss. “At first I didn’t believe it could be true,” he shared, remembering how he had initially reassured his mother that everything was fine. Now facing his new reality, Jonathan describes cycling through waves of anger, profound sadness, and emotional numbness.

The tragedy has sparked an incredible show of community support, with nearly $45,000 raised to help Jonathan with funeral arrangements. “The kindness of strangers has been overwhelming,” he said, adding that planning the services feels like his final act of love for his daughters. Through his grief, Jonathan has become an unexpected advocate for mental health awareness, urging other parents to seek help when needed.
